Letting go is hard | Hendersonville TN Child Photographer

Friday, August 12th, 2011

Wednesday night, I sat down at the computer to type up Mia’s 1st Day of Kindergarten sign. I kept telling my husband I can’t believe Mia is old enough to go to Kindergarten. I still remember the day of her birth like it was yesterday. I remember her first steps with my husband and I upstairs in our old house in Holly Springs. I even remember the zebra Gymboree pajamas she was wearing. I think back to the time I never thought she would ever grow any hair, and how I couldn’t wait to see her walking down the hallway and wave to me once she entered Kindergarten.

My, how years have changed. I am no longer teaching elementary school, she has a beautiful head of thick hair, and she’s no longer needing our fingers to help her keep her balance. As she picked out her outfit for her first day of school, she wanted to make sure she wore something pink (her favorite color), that she had the perfect hairbow (she borrowed mine), and that she wore one of the new things her Nana bought for her at our latest family trip to Gatlinburg. Ooookay. Adorned with her new gray (lacy) shirt from TJMaxx, her consignment store Justice skirt, and her pink sparkly Toms, she was off!

Before heading out, we had a mini photo shoot. I’m not always the greatest at taking pictures of my own children (they never seem to want to cooperate) but we savored this small moment yesterday morning. Hubby came home and took Elaina to school so Mia and I had a few moments together alone. We took her sign, new backpack, and the camera and took about 5 minutes to just play around. Here are the results.

Mia KindergartenI am trying to make more of an effort to document those little moments. It doesn’t matter the clothes they wear, the camera you have, or the background. Just remember that they grow up fast and when they grab those photos out of the shoebox many years down the road, nothing matters except that they can look back on that memory. They will relive it and will rejoice that you captured that day. Let’s all make a vow to take more pictures of the day-to-day things. It doesn’t matter if the photo is with your huge DSLR, your point and shoot, or heck, even your iPhone camera. Just get out there and document those moments.

I am very lucky that my girl is outgoing and wasn’t nervous in any sense of the word the first day. In fact, when I asked her if she was nervous, she turned to me and said (with a “duh” look on her face), “Moooom. No.” When I picked her up and asked her about her day, she even told me, “Moooooom, I don’t have to tell you EVERYthing.” How did she grow up so much in the short 3 hours she was in school. It’s going to be a LONG 13 years!

I read a poem the night before she went to school. Of course, I was boo-hooing by the end. I kept myself together after dropping her off. Knowing she is in good hands and that she was excited made that easy. I couldn’t help but wondering, though, what was going on.

I Wonder

I wonder what you’re doing right now,

And if everyone is treating you kind.

I hope there is a special person,

a nice friend that you can find.

I wonder if the teacher knows,

just how special you are to me.

And if the brightness of your heart

is something she can see.

I wonder if you are thinking about me,

and if you need a hug.

I already miss the sound of your voice

and how you give my leg a tug.

I wonder if you could possibly understand

how hard it is for me to let you grow.

On this day know that my heart breaks,

that this is the first step to letting my

baby go.

I know I am not the only parent thinking these same things while your babies (young and old) are away. Letting go is hard.

The last story I will tell is a story from one of my first few years of teaching. The dad of an amazing student came in for our conference. His daughter was well rounded, athletic, loved by all, high achieving, a self motivator, and just all around awesome. She was a twin and my track-mate had her brother. They also had an older brother in middle school. All of the siblings were equally awesome. At the end of our conference, I sat back and asked the dad, “So, what is your best parenting advice.” I was a new(ish) mom. I think Mia was around 2 at the time. She was beginning to come into her own and developing that lovely attitude. He thought for a second and he finally said, “You have to give your child the tools but let them do the work. You teach them right and wrong, teach them the skills they need, but don’t interfere with everything they do. Let them learn on their own. Let them learn from their mistakes. Let them settle their differences with their friends. This helps develop their character and gives them self-confidence in their choices.”

I remember thinking at the time how powerful that statement was. I think as a mom, I want to see my daughters succeed. I don’t want to see them hurt. I want to jump up and help them out in hard situations, but I always think back to that parent’s advice. We have to let them go. We have to believe in our selves enough to know that we have given them the tools they need and trust that they will know how to use them.

So go, baby girl. Use those tools. Use them correctly but if not, we will be here to help teach you again if you forget. Kindergarten will have it’s ups and downs, as will the rest of your life. Believe in yourself. We believe in you.

Nana’s in town! (+outtakes!) | Hendersonville TN Photographer

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

My mom was gracious enough to bless us with her presence this weekend.  She gets the itch to see them at least once a month and since it’s been a month since we were home in NC, she decided to make the trek up here.  Unfortunately, Poppy (my dad) and Unnie (my brother) had to stay behind and hold down the fort so they weren’t able to make the trip, too. :(

We had a fun time and Mia and Nana spent yesterday having a fun girls’ day of bowling, shopping, and buying a huge play bouncy ball that is going to be the death of me if it’s kicked inside the house one more time.  (sidenote:  it’s one of those really large plastic-y balls thats a good 18 inches in diameter and with the slightest kick, it goes soaring through the air.  I will let you finish the thought with what happens to picture frames and lamps after that…)

Anyway.  We have fallen in love with Sunday brunch at Bluegrass Country Club so we decided to take Nana today before she had to fly out.  In case you were wondering, Brunch didn’t let us down and I think mom could have opened her pocketbook and stuffed a few of the crepes for the trip home.  She said they were absolutely delish!  After brunch, we took a quick moment outside for a few pictures of Nana and the girls.  Have you ever heard a photographer say that their own children are the worst to photograph?  Well, I’m here to tell you that is the honest to goodness truth.  Oh, did I mention I have proof??

Here you go.  In all of it’s unedited glory.  Please take note of the little mama (AKA: Mia) and the little diva (Elaina) not wanting to have her picture taken.  She is a total mama’s girl and needs to be attached to my hip at all times.  Have I also mentioned that I even booked another local photographer to take my own children’s pictures this summer?  Yes.I.did.  The fantabulous Angela Crutcher of Angela Crutcher Photography will have the honor of roping my twosome while I sit back and smile and enjoy the time.  Good luck, Angela! :)   Here’s what you’re working with.

OUttakes

Here’s the best we could end up with!! Better luck next time, right? It’s the thought that counts and the moment that makes it special.

Love you, Mom!  Thanks for an awesome weekend full of food, fun, and your first time at sushi! :)

Project Twelve: January | Hendersonville TN Family Photographer

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Since my last post was about resolutions, I decided to post about another one.  2011 is proving to be a big year already.  I want to document my family every month… in our element.  No “dress up and get pretty” pictures.  This is raw.  This is real.  This is my life.  Every month in 2011, I will be taking a “Real” photo of my family.  It will involve all 4 of us and usually my wireless remote and tripod to make sure we are all in the picture at once.  At the end of the year, I’d like to put each of these photos in an album and keep the tradition going.  I think it sounds like fun!

So, for January 2011, we give you our snow picture.  Everyone that knows me well, knows I despise cold weather.  I despise snow.  I hate being bundled up and all the time it takes to get ready and then go freeze.  Sometimes I wonder if I am really my dad’s daughter because he is up at all hours of the night with a flashlight to see the first falling snowflakes of every snow. :)   It makes him giddy.  Me?  It makes me want to stay in my PJs, cuddled under a blanket by the fire, and drinking hot cider.

Here you go.  Us.

Hendersonville TN Family Photographer 1b

Since I’m on a roll with posting my own personal photos (I’m the bad photographer that rarely uploads photos of my own family, another resolution), here are two more for good measure.  My wonderful husband and his two “daddy’s girls” and the face behind the blog (me) with the girls.

While I’m thinking about it, notice my new gloves courtesy of my wonderful mother.  She knew I was looking for some fingerless gloves for those cold winter shoots and found me a pair.  Love them!

Hendersonville TN Family Photographer 2

Now, I want to challenge each and every one of you to take a photo of yourself and your family (or your dog, or whatever you live with) every month.  Make it a habit.  Maybe if I’m in a good mood in December, I’ll post a template for an album to put your 2011 pictures in.  You may want to remind me, though! :)

Home Sweet Home | Albemarle Stanly County NC Photographer

Monday, November 8th, 2010

This past weekend, I was back in NC and visiting my hometown of Albemarle.  On my way back into town from a night in Raleigh, I was driving between my husband’s hometown and my hometown.  My family likes to joke that I married a boy from across the river.  It’s true.  Our two counties are separated by Lake Tillery and beside a bridge connecting the two, there is Tillery Dam.  It had been pouring rain in Raleigh that entire day and the drizzle was coming to Albemarle.  I started across the long bridge and did a double take at how beautiful the dam looked.  The water was low, revealing the grasses.  The sky was a gorgeous blue with a few puffy clouds.  I knew I would regret not stopping and snapping a picture.

So, here you go.  A taste of my home.  Blue sky, country land, and water.  Home sweet home.

Tillery Dam, Stanly County NC

So, I threw (gently) the camera in the car (my husband probably just cringed reading that!) and got back on the road because it surely isn’t safe to stand on that bridge with such a small shoulder of the road. I made it about 100 yards before I came to a halt again. This golden field took my breath away. Stanly County is dripping with little (and not so little) pockets of land just like this. I’m lucky that when we moved to Hendersonville, Tennessee, we were blessed to see these same type of landscapes. I think I’m really going to like living here and making this our new home. New home sweet home.

Happy Fall, Y’all! | Nashville TN Photographer

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

This post is a little past due but a week before we left for Tennessee, I decided to put some cute new dresses on the girls and head out to an empty field in our neighborhood. We hit the afternoon golden sunlight and took some shots for the grandparents. Elaina was turning one the next week so this doubled as her first birthday photos as well. I thought I would show off my two beauties on my blog since they are in their fall smocked dresses.

Happy November!

Mia Lynn is 4 years old and is such a beautiful, spirited child. She brings so much joy and laughter into our household and told us this past week when she grows up, she wants to be a Rockstar. Good thing we moved to Nashville! She can become a Country Rockstar!

Elaina Grace just turned one year old and is an easy-going, delightful baby. She is generally super happy, especially if food is nearby. She absolutely adores her big sister and Mia loves having a little side kick around the house. I hope they continue to grow to be the best of friends and sisters.

We had some friends tag along and I snagged this really cute one of Grace.

Happy July 4th! | Garner Photographer

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

Last night, we packed up the family and headed to Lake Benson in Garner, NC. We got the stroller and the blankets ready, as well as my camera and tripod (which is on it’s last leg…). We let Mia play on the bounce houses and the many games they had available for children. She had a blast playing on the covered playground as well. After wearing her out, we picked the perfect spot for our blanket and watched the North Carolina Symphony play beautiful patriotic songs while Mia danced and sang to the music. Elaina enjoyed slobbering all over the beaded necklaces we had purchased. :)

After sunset, we watched the beautiful fireworks while listening to music. It’s amazing being surrounded by 20,000 people and listening to the distant BOOMs. The fireworks didn’t disappoint. When people say Garner has the best fireworks around, they aren’t kidding! I had set up my tripod on our blanket and captured a few shots to share. Try dodging a crawling infant and a hyped up 3 year old to keep your tripod (that again, is hanging on by a thread) steady and you’ve got a miracle. Here’s the final product!

Happy July 4th and Happy Birthday, America! Thank you to all that have served to keep our wonderful country free!

My Family | Nashville Hendersonville TN Photographer

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

My parents came up to Raleigh and spent the day with us.  Well, year-round schools had a Saturday snow make up day today so I spent the afternoon with them.  We ate a nice lunch together, and then Mom and I took Mia with us shopping.  I was in search of something to wear to an upcoming wedding.  I was also supposed to have an afternoon photoshoot but the wind was a little too strong for pictures late afternoon.  We had to reschedule those for later in the week but the good news was I got to eat supper with my parents before they headed back home.

While Elaina was napping, we had a small impromptu shoot in the front yard.  My parents moved into a new house on Christmas Eve 2009 and my mom is determined to get some photos of her family, especially granddaughters, up on the wall.  Elaina’s pictures will have to come later since she snoozed right through it.

In honor of Mother’s Day tomorrow, I thought I’d post a few photos of those that I love.

My mother and my firstborn that made me a mother.  These two are two peas in a pod.  It’s scary.

Now, for my wonderful and supportive husband and Mia.

I hope to snap a few of Elaina tomorrow after church. I’ll report back because it wouldn’t be Mother’s Day without both of my girls!
